alethiology n. the study of truth
It's a simple question that drives everything we do.
When asking 'how many customers' or 'how much profit', the truth of the answer depends on our assumptions and biases.
When was the data captured? From what system? With what parameters? Excluding which outliers?
What is a customer? Are they a name, a registrant, an account ID? Are they validated internally or externally? How are they matched across systems?
The truth is, data can be used to tell almost anything you want it to.
For an analytics project to succeed, defining the truth comes first. Though we reject inconsistency and broad assumptions, we abhor needless governance and cumbersome processes even more.
When you ask us a question, expect us to work collaboratively with you to produce an explanation, not just an answer - a solution built on definitions that can be accepted as truth by all parties involved.
